Gluten-Free Products...Right to your Doorstep!

Through an MBA connection I was lucky enough to meet Dan, founder of gfreely.com - home delivery of new and exciting gluten-free products! I love what they are doing and cannot believe I haven't stumbled upon it before. Not only do they ship it to your doorstep, but each month they choose different products for you to try.

We all know that at first diagnosis you are lost...simply confused and overwhelmed. Gluten-free products are pricey and there isn't much information out there on which are the best bang for your buck and taste the most like "real food". This frustration is what is what drove Dan to start Gfreely...why not give individuals a chance to try different products each month so they can avoid the waste associated with the trial and error process?
This way they can familiarize themselves with various brands and avoid buying products that are either thrown away or you feel you are forced to eat because, darn it, that loaf of bread cost me $10!

Even though I have my favorites, I still love this idea and plan to sign-up. The market for gluten-free products is growing so quickly that new, better tasting and higher quality items are coming out all of the time - many times without our knowledge! Judging Season: AKA Many Trips to San Antonio

August to October is gymnastics judging season - and I am lucky enough to be a judge for levels 2-6 here in Texas. It is my favorite time of year because I get to be in the gym and see the excited faces of these little girls as they get better and better. At this age they are still learning and having fun without stress...it is a great lesson in realizing the real value in your experiences.

Anyway, our region spans from Austin all the way down to Corpus Christi, but I happen to spend most of my weekends in San Antonio - not necessarily known as a gluten-free hub but luckily well-stocked with chain restaurants. 

When we judge gymnastics we normally head down on Friday evenings and stop to eat - this has included many trips to Chili's and just last weekend, Logan's Roadhouse. I was pleased to find a large gluten-free menu at the New Braunfels location (see below) but unfortunately the "salad person was new and didn't know to avoid bacon bits". Either way they fixed it and it came out wonderfully - so we have a new option! 

This does tend to be the only eating out experience of the weekend since the gyms actually provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for Saturday and breakfast and lunch for Sunday. With 10 hours of judging to do we don't have time to dine out between sessions. This means that I have to bring my own food, since I would never expect the mom's or owners to go out of their way just for me.  

Riding in on their white horse is Snap Kitchen. I know I have talked a lot about them before but they literally are a god-send for me. I can bring quick, healthy meals with me that are easily microwavable and filling. Phew! I personally love the spaghetti, bison and quinoa hash and the mayan pork - but everything is amazing. 

In a nutshell - I always know that I can fall back on the lovely restaurant chains of Chili's, Logan's Roadhouse, Maggiano's, Macaroni Grill and more to survive - then focus on surviving the brand new little gymnasts who are just trying to remember their routines :)

Gatti's Gluten-Free Pizza FREE 7/31

I've seen a huge uptick in visits to my post about Gatti's Austin gluten-free pizza: http://g-freeinthecity.blogspot.com/2012/05/mr-gattis-gluten-free-pizza.html and I KNOW it is because they are getting fantastic press coverage and social media props for their upcoming gluten-free FREE pizza day on 7/31 (tomorrow!).

They have a great cross-contact policy (of course there is other pizza there, but they are awesome about making it all separate - it is the chance we take EVERY TIME we eat out!) and the crust is made of ancient grains which makes it even healthier - almost like a whole grain crust.

Here is an update...my pizza, luckily I got one before they ran out, but I must say that I will be going back and if you didn't get a chance to try it, don't be shy. It was tasty and on top of that it's the cheapest g-free pizza in town!

Off the Menu: Taverna

For a long time I've known that Taverna here in Austin had a couple of gluten-free items, and on many occasions I crave their Balsamic Chicken Risotto (it is to die for!) but this last brunch I was presented for the first time with a gluten-free menu! How excited was I to realize that they finally put it on paper :) I'm not sure if this menu serves all Taverna locations (I would assume so)- but at least I know I have options when it comes to Austin!

G-Free Weekend in San Antonio

Last weekend I traveled down I35 to San Antonio to spend some time with my parents. My dad was in town for a fraternity convention and of course my mom couldn't pass up the opportunity to be so close to me and hang out :) "Frat camp" (as it was referred to) was at the Grand Hyatt on the Riverwalk and was quite the event.

As usual I had done my research and unfortunately didn't get very far. I shot emails out to a number of restaurants and only heard back from one! So...that's the one we went to, it is called Barriba Cantina.

From the email I was told that "most" of the menu was gluten-free - which I hate - but since it was my only response it was the deciding factor...plus I saw that they were owned by County Line where I have always had success in Austin. Unfortunately, I got sick. Now, I cannot pinpoint what it would've been because it was a minor attack so I want to say it was more likely cross-contamination or maybe a sauce thickener they are unaware of? Regardless, I ordered tacos, chips & queso and a margarita. In the end it could've very well been the taste of my dad's margarita with Grand Marnier in it (but then again that is listed as a safe alcohol, so I don't know). Suffice it to say, we went to bed early that night.

The next day we were determined to aim for safety so we went with fruit for breakfast and then decided that Achiote at the hotel would be the safest bet from that point forward (they had gotten back to me later, AND I called - they knew EVERYTHING - awesome). I was able to speak to a chef on duty who had worked for a Celiac GM previously so he was well aware. For lunch I successfully got a turkey and avocado wrap with cucumber salad, for dinner a burger with gluten-free bread and fresh french fries, and for breakfast on Sunday eggs, bacon, gluten-free bread and fruit.

Bottom-line - I am now destined to stay at the Grand Hyatt each and every time I am in San Antonio! I want to thank them for their help and hospitality. :)

Okay, this one is more like what is NOT on the menu! Tacodeli has done a fantastic job making almost everything gluten-free with a corn tortilla, and they are very careful about it. Added bonus - their breakfast taco "potato" is mashed and SO good.

There isn't much seating at the different locations, so I think the best bet with Tacodeli is to order for pick-up. However, if it is a nice day, lunch on a picnic table is relaxing and fun.

Guero's is awesome. Not only are they located on South Congress, but they also boast fantastic margaritas, live music on their outdoor stage and a very "Austin" atmosphere. I love that they were one of the first to have a full, printed gluten-free menu in this city, and they know what they are talking about. And, as always, when I can eat queso somewhere it is a win-win.

For my friend Maha's birthday bash she chose Gusto Italian Kitchen off Burnet Road - and of course made sure they had some gluten-free for me (such a great friend!).

As usual I called ahead to make sure and got an overwhelmingly confident response about their offerings and understanding of the diet. Upon arrival, I felt the same confidence from our waiter and the manager so I successfully ordered a VERY yummy pizza!

They let me know that the following items (all toppings and sauces included) can be made gluten-free so I will definitely be back - I miss Italian food and the more places I can get it the better :)

Mr. Gatti's Gluten-Free Pizza!!

I was so excited to not only receive this picture of an insert for Gatti's gluten-free pizza thanks to my friend Jeff, but also to drive by and see a nice, big poster too! Gatti's is taking g-free mainstream at all of its Austin locations according to the advertising - and I couldn't be happier!

As many of you have noticed from Domino's recent news, cross-contamination is a huge problem when it comes to eating gluten-free in a mainstream location. Gatti's requires their employees to take a training course on gluten-free, take a test to ensure they understand and then follow strict procedures in the kitchen to avoid any problems. This means that even Celiac customers are safe and can have this pizza without fear, and you don't have to worry about mix-ups with orders because there is a designated gluten-free specialist who fields them all.

While I know other restaurants offer gluten-free pizza here in town, Gatti's has a great price point that is hard to beat and offers a 12" option that is better for families. Let me know if you try and what you think!

On their website they still list only 6 locations -  but don't worry, the inserts never lie! Added bonus - they actually do it right...

Off the Menu: Cover 3

Cover 3 is right down the street from both  my house and my new internship, with the added bonus of being centrally located for almost everyone! It is a great happy hour location with free wi-fi if you have business meetings.

In addition to the official gluten-free menu items listed below (from their on-site menu) you can get the hamburgers without a bun as long as you make sure to explain that it must be kept from cross-contamination.
