Mr. Gatti's Gluten-Free Pizza!!
I was so excited to not only receive this picture of an insert for Gatti's gluten-free pizza thanks to my friend Jeff, but also to drive by and see a nice, big poster too! Gatti's is taking g-free mainstream at all of its Austin locations according to the advertising - and I couldn't be happier!
As many of you have noticed from Domino's recent news, cross-contamination is a huge problem when it comes to eating gluten-free in a mainstream location. Gatti's requires their employees to take a training course on gluten-free, take a test to ensure they understand and then follow strict procedures in the kitchen to avoid any problems. This means that even Celiac customers are safe and can have this pizza without fear, and you don't have to worry about mix-ups with orders because there is a designated gluten-free specialist who fields them all.
While I know other restaurants offer gluten-free pizza here in town, Gatti's has a great price point that is hard to beat and offers a 12" option that is better for families. Let me know if you try and what you think!
On their website they still list only 6 locations - but don't worry, the inserts never lie! Added bonus - they actually do it right...

The truth about salads...
There is a misunderstanding among those who do not eat gluten-free that salads are a perfect go-to to feed us when there are no other options. I have to admit, this is not always true and kind of frustrating...
First off, salads are not universally gluten-free! Lettuce is...therefore, just asking if I want a salad is not enough information. I need to know what is on that salad:
- Is there meat? If so, what kind? Most deli meats have gluten fillers and many cooked meats have seasonings or are in danger of being cross-contaminated in the kitchen
- What about cheese? Celiac patients cannot have the "moldy" cheeses so if they are sprinkled in that's a no-go
- If croutons are automatically on included (pre-packaged) then forget it; and also don't accidentally put them on and take them off because that's cross-contamination too
- Less likely, but still a concern, how did you cut up and prepare the vegetables? Did you cut something glutenous with that knife first?
- Finally....dressing. MOST dressings are NOT gluten-free. I would pretty much need to know the brand and check with them or read the label in order to feel comfortable with it. Oil & vinegar is an option but...that gets old fast.
Secondly, salads are not that good, especially with all the goodies that have to be left off from above. I understand it seems easy and safe but I mean come on...I can't eat glorified lettuce every meal of the day. The hunger comes back about 30 minutes later and I end up reaching for some plain potato chips.
For those of you who have made this mistakes time and time again, this is not to blame you...how would you know? Please just be aware that if we do get a salad it has to be specific and if we have to spend more than one meal with you, get creative and try to provide something different next time around :)

Off the Menu: Opal Divine's Freehouse
I had no idea that Opal Divines had a gluten-free list! Now, there are multiple locations in Austin but this one was for the Freehouse location (West 6th). It may be the same across the board but I don't want to make that assumption so make sure you ask!
The list is not necessarily a menu, but it's there to guide you along with the menu on what you can order. There are a few missing things (salad dressings, etc.) so there might be a little back and forth with your waiter, but they are laid-back there and ours was more than willing to help me out.
- Chicken Soup (no tortilla strips)
- Garden Salad (with chicken, mahi or shrimp)
- Honey Mustard, Lite Italian, Prickly Pear Vinaigrette dressings
- Grilled Chicken
- Beef (that's all it says, not sure what that means!)
- Bacon, Eggs, Sausage Patties
- Steamed Veggies
- Bratwurst and Sauerkraut
- Cole Slaw
- Mahi-Mahi Plate
- Burger (no bun) - be careful with cross-contamination
- Black Bean Pico
- Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream
Good luck and enjoy! Sounds like brunch is a good call :)

Gluten-Free Options at Austin Food Carts/Trailers!
I found a great website that outlines what is available gluten-free at the different food carts and food trailers around Austin. If you've been here, and driven around south of the river at all, you will notice that we LOVE our food trailers - there are entire lots of them everywhere. They are quick, easy and from what I hear...very tasty. So, instead of avoiding them (although cross contamination can be an issue) I can pick and choose!
The website can be found here: http://austinfoodcarts.com/gluten-free-options/ but I'll go ahead and outline them for you below! Enjoy! - They have a map as well.
